Bio
Christina Lucia Giuffrida (b. 1990, Sydney, AUS) is an Queer Australian artist, who currently lives in Brooklyn (NYC) with her wife Sophia and their dog Vito. The longer that Giuffrida lives outside of Australia, the more tenuous she feels the thread connecting her to home becoming. Painting this Australian inspired world from imagination, memory and personal photographs has become a way to both maintain and galvanize her relationship to home with from the other side of the world. The community of lavender women that populate this landscape have become Giuffrida's proxies, living out the cinematic outdoor adventures in her stead. Now that the stage is set, we witness fantasies about geographical and cultural longing that collides with a Queer Retrofuturism. The intensity of the gouache paint used in the works brings these potent atmospheres to life along with the tactile matte surface, an affect of the cold pressed paper stretched over panel. The images wrap around the edges of the panel, giving these works a weighted sense of object-hood and presence on the wall.
Giuffrida has most recently exhibited with Taymour Grahne (London), SoHo Revue, (UK), Eve Leibe Gallery (UK), The Prior Art Space (Berlin), Steven Zevitas Gallery (MA) and Collar Works (NY). Her works having been featured in Front Runner Magazine, Create Magazine, Peripheries and Journal of the Harvard Divinity School. Christina earned her BVA from the Sydney College of the Arts and her MFA from the New York Academy of Art. She is a recipient of the Art Start Grant from the Australia Council and Emerging Artist Grant from the Ian Potter Foundation and has participated in residencies in Italy, USA and the Dominican Republic. Christina's works are part of the MACAAL Collection (Marrakesh, Morocco), the Beth Rudin DeWoody collection (NYC) and the X Museum Collection (Beijing, China).
